If only we could lose weight by not doing anything differently. Unfortunately, if we want to be slimmer and healthier, changes must be made, and one of those changes on a weight loss program is saying goodbye to the booze.

But is alcohol really that bad for weight loss? Put simply: yes, but the good news is you don't have to completely eliminate alcohol from your life.

Alcohol is high in calories, it stimulates the appetite, inhibits quality sleep and the body's ability to burn fat efficiently. It also lowers testosterone levels for up to 24 hours after your last drink. An American Journal of Clinical Nutrition study found when eight men were given two vodkas mixed with low calorie lemonade 30 minutes apart, their body lipid oxidation (ability to burn fat) dropped by a massive 73%.

The main problem with alcohol is that most of it is converted into a substance called acetate, which the body burns instead of burning fat as an energy source.

Alcohol also stimulates the appetite, not something that is conducive to weight loss. Researchers from Denmark's Royal Veterinary & Agricultural University found a group of men who ate a meal with alcohol, consumed many more calories of food, than the group who did not have alcohol.

Alcohol also reduced testosterone levels. One heavy drinking session will raise the level of the muscle wasting hormone, cortisol, which increases the breakdown of testosterone.

One gram of alcohol is seven calories, almost as high as fat, which is nine calories a gram. When you consider a gram of protein is only four calories, it is easy to see alcohol is not very good value if you're trying to control your appetite.

If you like a tipple, it's not all bad news though.

A 2004 study in the International Journal of Obesity compared two groups of dieters over three months

Both groups were limited to 1500 calories a day. One group had 150 calories of white wine a day, the other had 150 calories of grape juice a day.

The weight loss of the two groups was 4.7kg, and 3.7kg respectively.

Another US survey found that dieters who abstained from alcohol don't necessarily lose any more weight than those who take a moderate amount.

A small amount of alcohol, particularly red wine, is excellent for lowering stress levels and preventing heart disease.

It seems the role alcohol plays in your life, whether good or bad, boils down to the amount. While a glass is good for the heart, more than two and you'll be doing yourself damage.

If you are trying to lose weight, and would like to have the odd glass of alcohol, limit your intake to one or two glasses a week.

You will also benefit by changing to a lower calorie drink, like wine, or using diet mixers rather than high sugar ones.

Mix your wine with soda water and drink a glass of water in between glasses of alcohol. If you drink to unwind, as most people do, try something else like an easy walk, some meditation, a scented bath or phone a friend if you've had a difficult day.

Confused yet? The short of it is, if you are trying to lose weight don't drink alcohol. If this is too much to bear, limit yourself to one or two drinks a week.

Limit the amount of animal foods that you consume. Certainly cut out empty calorie junk foods such as pies, cakes, ice creams, donuts, soda, alcohol, sugar, and white flour foods. Whatever you put in your mouth should be as valuable as possible. Eat nutrient dense foods, foods that are closer to nature. If you wish to dip your raw veggies try non-fat or low fat dressings.

Be sure to eat three main meals and two snacks daily. This will actually help to keep your metabolism active. Get a good pair of walking shoes and USE them. When the weather permits walk out of doors. If not, walk in place while you watch your favorite program. You will surprised how fast the time goes by. If you can't walk for thirty minutes consecutively, start out with five minutes at a time. Before you know it you will be walking ten then twenty and eventually you should be able to easily walk for thirty minutes. You can try to sing or repeat the alphabet or talk with your family or a friend while you walk. You should be able to hold a conversation as you walk - if not, you might be walking too quickly. Pace yourself and make it fun!
Get some good work-out music. When we hear energizing music our heart rate increases and our bodies are filled with a sense of power.

Having a weight loss resolution is sometimes harder than resolving to earn more money. But if that's really what you want or need to do then here are a couple of suggestions to get you started.

Be clear about your situation.

Know your weight and body mass index. Know exactly how many pounds you need to lose. Visit your doctor to see if there are any other health conditions you have and should be aware of. You may already be in danger of having diabetes or hypertension and must therefore further reduce intake of foods rich in sugar, oils, and fats. Respiratory problems may also make strenuous exercises unacceptable for your health. It's better to know all these things before you start working on keeping your weight loss resolution.

Design a diet plan.

Diligent research can easily help you formulate the ideal diet plan for your health and needs. But if you don't think you're up to the task, consult a doctor, fitness expert, or nutritionist to help you come up with the right diet regime. When making a diet plan on your own, remember to take into consideration your level of self-control as well as the amount of money and time needed to stick to the diet plan.

Design an exercise plan.

The ideal exercise plan combines routines to develop your strength, stamina, and flexibility. Of course, you're welcome to increase more repetitions or types for any of the three if that's what you feel you should concentrate more on. Exercise always accompanies diet and vice versa. Diet may help you lose weight but it won't help in making your body adjust properly to the changes it undergoes. Exercise can, however, ensure that you won't end up having loose flabby skin when the pounds fall off your body.

Get a pedometer.

Studies show that people with generally inactive lifestyles only walk about two or three thousand steps a day. Adding 2,000 steps to that figure will only help you maintain your weight. Only if you go beyond that will walking help you lose weight. A pedometer can let you know how you're doing everyday. This is especially helpful if you're always on the go and have no time for stationary exercises. When shopping for a pedometer, remember to test it out first. If you take a hundred steps, an accurate pedometer could give you a reading ranging between eighty-five to a hundred five steps. If your pedometer shows otherwise, try changing its position before retesting it.

Find other ways to exercise.

If you find yourself getting bored with your solitary forms of exercise, consider other alternatives like picking up a new sport or any physical hobby. Call up your friends and have them join you for a weekly running session. Explore your spirit of adventure. Rock climbing is, for instance, exciting and challenging but it's a good way to exercise your heart and body as well.

Eat more small meals than fewer big meals.

Restricting yourself to breakfast, lunch, and dinner makes it easier for you to rationalize eating more than you should. Rather than make yourself open to temptation, just eat more but smaller meals each day.

Nibble only as a last resort.

Resist the urge to nibble! It's easy to tell ourselves that no harm can come from nibbling but the next thing you know is that one nibble has become the equivalent of a hundred nibbles for the whole day! If there's no actual and urgent need for you to nibble, don't!

Have an emergency healthy snack ready.

There will be times that you'll get stuck in a place where there's no food considered acceptable by your diet regime. As such, the next logical choice is to eat what's available rather than starve to death, right? That's true...but only if you haven't an emergency healthy snack tucked away. Always be prepared! You might have no way of predicting when such emergencies will occur but you're at least prepared to meet them head on.

Drink lots of water.

Water will not only detoxify your body, but it can also keep you feel full far longer than usual. Drink water as well instead of sodas or any other beverage. Water won't make you gain weight but the same can't be said for other drinks.

Have you found yourself a few pounds up? Does your weight loss routine seem to go 2 pounds up- 1 pound back?

The first step in any successful weight loss plan, is how to get the motivation. We all know the diets, read the newest and latest best sellers. However, we keep up with the same old habits. We join clubs on the 1st of Jan. only to disappear by Feb. 1st.

What is your motivation for loosing weight? If you haven't found it, you probably won't succeed. How about being healthier and being around to see your kids graduate.

How about just looking better in clothes?

For me my motivation came when I decided to see how the camera saw me. I had my wife take pictures from all angles in my bathing suit. Next, I posted these pictures on my mirrors, refrigerator and even in my truck. After a week went by, I became disgusted by the pictures. I stopped in to a health club and had them measure my body fat. They told me politely that I was 27 percent lard.

That was the breaker!

After that, I began an exercise program that included diet, drinking more water, weight training, aerobics, monthly body composition measurements, keeping a log, and getting plenty of sleep.

The only real diet that makes sense is to get a steady diet of exercise. Start slow and progress forward. Visit a gym, see a trainer. Do whatever it takes to get motivated. Get intense if the Doctor says it is Ok. Watch the Biggest Loser on TV for motivation. Not everybody wins the trophy but most go home healthier and a winner.

Ab Workouts Slow Fat Loss

Not only are most traditional ab workouts a waste of time, but they also slow your fat loss efforts. Each workout you spend crunching takes time away from more effective fat loss methods - such as interval training.

That's right, the common man's (and woman's) ab workout taken from Shape magazine or Muscle'n'Fitness often hurts their fat loss program more than it helps it.

Remember - I'm in the business of getting you the most fat loss in the least amount of exercise time...so you have little room in your program for traditional ab crunches (with the exception of using basic ab exercises for beginners who need to learn to use their ab muscles after a lifetime of inactivity).

Instead, I focus on exercises that build a 6-pack AND burn a lot of calories at the same time. That's why I'm a big fan of making EVERY exercise an ab exercise (by bracing the abs in every movement), as well as using total body ab exercises (such as Mountain Climbers, the Spiderman Lunge/Climb, and the Stability Ball Jackknife).

These exercises use far more muscle mass than a traditional crunch. In fact, some of the total body ab exercises are "interval-like" in nature, helping to put more metabolic turbulence on the body, and as you know, that's what burns calories during AND after the workout.

Now of course you know that you can't spot reduce the fat on your body - so doing an endless number of crunches not only does little for you in terms of losing fat, it also wastes your time in your quest for a 6-pack.

Here are a couple of strategies to maximize your workout time when your goal is to get lean, and get down to a low-enough body fat percentage to see your abs in as little workout time as possible:

(If you've got 2 hours a day to workout, by all means, do whatever your heart desires...but I don't think many of us that live in the real world have that kind of time.)

A) First, simply cut back on your ab training - If your goal is to simply lose fat, gain a little muscle, and just look as good possible, then you can't spend 30 minutes on abs everyday. You can build your 6-pack by doing less than 30 minutes of ab exercise per week.

I'm convinced that no one (not even a fitness model or pro bodybuilder) needs more than 30 minutes of ab training per week.

In fact, at the photoshoots I supervise for the fitness magazines, I get to talk to a lot of fitness models and what they tell me about their training routines might shock you. Most of them don't train nearly as frequently as you or I might think.

Instead, they've worked hard over the years with the basic lifts to build their body, and now many of them simply use nutrition and maintenance workouts to keep their abs showing.

B) Second, replace your crunches with the total body ab exercises I mentioned earlier. Also, if you have access to a cable machine, you can do weighted ab exercises such as kneeling cable crunches.

C) And finally, if you are doing intervals for fat loss as I recommend, you can use the following approach to increase the difficulty of your ab and interval training. However, this is an advanced method only.

During your interval workout, perform an ab exercise during your active recovery period. For example, if you are doing running intervals on a treadmill...

Run for 60 seconds at your work interval speed. Immediately stop the treadmill, get off, and go into a set of 20 Mountain Climbers. Climb back on the treadmill and start it up for your next interval. Repeat for 3-6 intervals.

You can also use basic spinal stabilization "ab exercises" such as the plank, side plank, or advanced plank versions (i.e. plank with your arms on the ball) to train your spinal stabilization while under heavy breathing stress. I learned this technique from Dr. Stuart McGill.

Remember: Always train safe, with good form, and be conservative. Don't try to be a hero in the gym, but you should safely challenge yourself in each workout.

Close Kept Secrets to Weight Loss Lesson #2

Welcome to lesson #2. First of all, I believe that gratitude is so important in everyday life. With this in mind, I am in awe at the response for this ezine and I want to thank you for trusting the process and believing in yourself. When I woke up the next day after setting this up and saw the number of people who subscribed, I broke down in tears. I owe everything I have created to God. He led me to do this and through Him I will help you. I am here to be the light for you to know that you already possess the wholeness within. We have several layers that we will be uncovering. You will then be able to make new choices in your quest for weight loss and be putting daily plans for yourself in place. You will be amazed at the difference. My intention is that you get results!

As we proceed through each lesson, I will be reviewing some of the content in the previous lessons as well to recap. Hey, it doesnt hurt for you to hear information over and over again, does it? Remember it takes 21 days to create a habit. In lesson #1, we discussed how everything is made up of energy. Your thoughts are pure energy. Whatever you put out, is what you will get back. The Law of Attraction is set up and will manifest those things in your life which you attract with your thoughts. Changing your thoughts will be your greatest challenge. It was for me and it took daily effort to do so. When you look at your life currently, what have you attracted with your thoughts? If youre overweight, then what do you believe about yourself? If you believed that you could actually lose weight, these thoughts would have been released into the Universe to produce a completely different response.

I mentioned previously Louise Hays book, You Can Heal Your Life, and in it she talks about how anger is the core issue of weight issues. Now, did you do your homework assignment? The homework assignment was to write down those people in your life who youre angry with and remember you can include yourself. You were also supposed to write down what they did that made you angry.

For me, I didnt feel love from either parent, but I had such a special bond with my father so I held on to his energy in a more devastating way in my body. My father died when I was fourteen, and theres an entire story behind that one in an e-book, Close Kept Secrets to Overcoming Illness. I felt responsible for his life and for his death and that book will detail everything about how I attracted a horrific illness because I carried so much negative energy in me relating to childhood. With this in mind, I carried anger at not feeling loved and having the childhood I believed I deserved.

Okay, ready to release that anger? First, I want to explain the process. As an integrative body therapist, I work with clients face-to-face or over the telephone to help release their pain using Rapid Eye Technology and Emotional Freedom Techniques. Energy is energy and can be utilized all over the world. I did hear from a subscriber that she felt tingly all over after this process so it does work. Were on this journey together being supported by God. It is similar to prayer energythe person doesnt have to be right there in order to see that prayer works.

What is Rapid Eye Technology (RET)? Its a technology which was developed to help release pain and trauma so that a person can experience love and joy on a deeper level. It stimulates the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep cycle, a natural release process. Your eyes flutter when you are in REM sleep similar to watching a baby sleep and this is where the release process takes place. How many of you have experienced waking up in the middle of the night remembering that you were supposed to do something? This is your brain at work for you while you sleep. Well, in RET, youre awake and youre processing and releasing your stuff. Theres also guided imagery, charka clearing, affirmations and life skills which are part of this process as well. RET is great for balancing left and right brains because the left brain has to know why whereas the right brain sees the positive/spiritual aspect of the world. In addition, well be using Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). The premise of this technique is that when one experiences a negative emotion like anger, there is a disruption in the bodys energy system resulting in various symptoms. EFT is similar to acupuncture without the needles.

When I work with clients, we go through six to twelve sessions. Depending upon the amount of stuff one is carrying will determine how long the duration of the sessions so just keep this in mind. The results are absolutely amazing as the person feels lighter after releasing.

Okay, we have that out of the way. Now lets proceed.

These processes address the underlying cause of most weight issuesthe need to tranquilize with food the anxiety which is felt by you with unresolved emotional issues. Until ones underlying issue is dealt with, the need to overeat will continue. This is why many weight loss programs fail over the long term. People may lose weight using them but since the underlying emotional issue is still there, the need to medicate feelings through food will ever be present. It has been my experience in working with people who are overweight that the underlying emotion has to be released in order for new choices to be made; otherwise they will just revert back.

Right now, sit back and think about your anger. Judge where you are on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the highest) with your anger that we spoke about earlierwho youre mad at and why. Now, if youre not feeling anger, then identify if its sadness, guilt or shame.

Release Process

State your intention for what you want out of your personal session and ask God, angels or your guides for assistance. If uncomfortable emotions surface, acknowledge them by writing down what youre feeling. Read the entire process (you'll be doing several things) to the end of the ezine before proceeding.

1) Get comfortable in a chair or on the couch. Find two spots. One in each corner of the room at eye level.

2) Move your eyes to the left and right as rapidly as possible for the intent to release (as you move your eyes from left to right, look up at the seam between the ceiling and the wall and then slowly move your gaze downward to the seam between the wall and the floor, then return to eye level. Its like a zigzag sequence.

3) After several seconds of this, open your eyes wide and then scrunch them closed as you breathe in and out. Do this no more than three times.

4) If the emotion still seems strong, return to step 2 and begin again. Only do this process twice.

5) Open your mouth wide and take a big breath, hold it in a second and then blast the energy out to dissolve in the light. Do this three times.

While youre doing the above process, you can say the following while moving your eyes:

Release all trauma/Release all the anger/Release all the sadness/Release all the frustration/Release all the grief/Release all the helplessness/Release all the hopelessness/Release all pity/Release all the poor me/Release it.

Energy Realignment

Tap the pressure points outlined below with the first two fingers (index and middle fingers) on your hand 7-10 times while repeating the phrases below. Heres some you can use or you can make up your own to make it unique to your situation.

Youll always fill in the blank and then complete the statement with the same phrase.

Even though my mother didnt like me, I deeply and completely accept myself. Even though I didnt feel love from my father, I deeply and completely accept myself. Even though my mother doesnt think Im good enough, I deeply and completely accept myself. Even though Im embarrassed by my weight, I deeply and completed accept myself.

1) Beginning of the eyebrow towards your nose
2) Side of the eye (either eye)
3) Under center of eye on cheekbone (either eye)
4) Under nose
5) Under bottom lip
6) Right below the collarbone (either collarbone)
7) Under the arm, about 4 inches below the arm pit (either arm)
8) Tap all over the top of head for good energy flow
9) Form a fist and rub in the clockwise motion over your heart

Dont worry if youre not sure if youre hitting the right points and saying it just right. You will still get results. There are many energy points all over your body. Trust in yourself and know that God is with you every step of the way.

Now, judge the intensity on a scale of 1-10. If youre not at a 1 or a 2, then repeat the tapping.

You can tap throughout the day, especially when issues of food begin to arise (even though I have this craving for chips, I deeply and completely accept myself). I do a morning routine of tapping and I include exercise, meditation and prayer. I tap throughout the day and it keeps me centered and then I do a night routine as well. I tap when I have to do a presentation and Im experiencing fear. I tap when Im about to have a conversation which is uncomfortable and Im experiencing fear. I tap in my car. Im sure it must be funny to the person who is in the car next to me. Just like me, this will become part of your daily routine.

Positive Affirmations

The mind does not know the difference between what is real and what is imagined. Athletes use this concept to envision themselves as already have completed their feat. They visualize themselves being triumphant. This is what separates those who are successful and those who still are presented with challenges. You must believe yourself as if you have already are at your desired weight.

With this in mind, its important to use these as if they are already occurring. Once you do this, you will manifest and attract exactly what you focus your thoughts on. Use these or create your own and say them throughout the dayseveral times a day. It works to put them on sticky notes or 3x5 cards so youre reminded to do them. Place them on your refrigerator, your mirror..any place that is visible.

Make sure your legs are still straight. Slowly lower your hips back to the starting position. You can try this a few times every day.

The Seated Torso Twist

For this stomach exercise, you begin with a sitting position. First, bend your knees so that your feet are flat against the floor. Place your feet slightly apart (about hip width). Put your arms straight out in front of you with your fingers interlocking. Now contract your stomach muscles and slowly lean back to about forty-five degrees. While still holding this contraction, rotate your torso to the right as far as you can comfortably. Remember to use your stomach muscles to control your movement. You dont want your arms to lead this movement, but need to have your upper body moving. One you have rotated to as far as you can, rotate back to the starting position in the center. Now repeat the movement and rotate to the left side. Keep in mind that you need to go slow. Never allow the momentum to twist you and make sure your movements are controlled.
