Three quarters of the earth's surface is covered with water. Over the millennia it has shaped the earth, changing its structures and transforming it. Water has the same potential for the dieter, transforming their body.

The human body is between 45 and 75 percent water, depending on the amount of lean tissue and fat. Lean tissue (which includes muscles, bones, organs, skin, etc.) contains over 70 percent water, while fat (adipose) tissue contains only 10 percent. So, the leaner a person is, the more water their body holds. This is why it is essential for athletes with larger amounts of lean muscle tissue to take in greater quantities of water than the average Joe (or Jane) on the street. Water is one of the (if not THE) most important nutrients in the body.

Water makes up a large percentage of the volume of blood. Over 80 percent of the blood's volume is water. Water is important for transport. It helps transport electrolytes and energy throughout the body to target cells. It is also involved in many of the chemical reactions in the body, necessary for producing energy and maintaining homeostasis. Water is important in the digestive process, as well. It is essential in the removal of waste from the anabolic (building up) and catabolic (tearing down) processes going on in the body every minute, especially in dieters.

Myths
Drinking too much water will make you bloated and promote water retention. Old wives tale (sorry to any old wives out there.) Drinking water actually helps promote the flushing of water out of the system. The body only holds on to water when it thinks there is going to be a shortage. If it is getting an adequate supply, it will use the water for all its essential functions.

Ice cold water promotes more calorie burning. This one didn't come from old wives, but instead from misguided scientists. The belief was that since the water was cold going in, the body would have to burn extra calories to heat the water up. This simply is not true. The internal temperature of the body is enough to passively warm the water as it passes through the digestive system and into the bloodstream. So, ice cold water is good for a hot day to cool you off, but it does not promote more active calorie burning.

Drinking water with a meal slows down the digestion. This one has no real basis anywhere. Water is a key component in the digestive process. Drinking too much water during a meal might slow down the digestive process, but that is due to a full stomach, not the water. Anytime the stomach is stretched to capacity its ability to digest the foods becomes slightly inhibited. Drinking a regular glass of water with a meal will actually enhance digestion.

If you want to do the Men's health belly off program, here is the ultimate challenge from the 8 week program.

For example, when it calls for 50 pushups, you could do 25 pushups, rest, then another 15 pushups, rest, and then finish with 10 more pushups. Then you'd move to the 25 jumps.

Let's take a look at each exercise and the form for all movements.

First up, you start with 50 Prisoner Squats. In this exercise, place your hands behind your head, squeeze your shoulder blades together, keep your chest up, and do regular bodyweight squats. To squat, push your hips back first, then bend your knees and squat until your thighs are parallel to the floor. Squeeze your glutes, and push yourself back up to the start position.

The second exercise is the classic pushup for 50 reps. Place your hands slightly wider than shoulder width apart on the floor, squeeze your abs and keep your body in a straight line from head to feet. Lower your chest to the ground, keeping your body in a straight line, and then press up to the start position.

Twenty-five jumps are next. Start with your feet shoulder-width apart, quickly drop your hips and then jump up. Land softly and bend your knees to absorb the impact, then explode up into another jump as quickly as possible. Repeat for all 25 jumps.

Next, move to Stability Ball Leg Curls for 25 repetitions. Lie on your back and place your feet on top of a ball. Squeeze your butt and bridge your hips up so your body is in a straight line from heels to shoulders. Bend your knees, contract your hamstrings, and curl the ball toward your butt while keep your butt up in the air. Return to the start position and do that 24 more times.

Keep the ball handy, and get ready for 50 Stability Ball Jackknifes. Place your elbows on a bench and the laces of your shoes on the ball. Your body will be suspended in a straight line between the ball and the bench. Squeeze your abs and keep your body in a straight line as you tuck your knees into your chest by bringing the ball forward.

Use the bench for the next exercise as well, where you'll do 50 step-ups (25 for each leg). Place one foot on the bench, and use that leg to pull you up to the standing position. Step back down, return the foot to the floor, and then repeat. Do all reps for one side and then switch.

Time for some upper body exercises. This time, you'll do 25 pullups. Grab the bar with an overhand grip and hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Pull your chest up to the bar with each rep. This is one exercise where almost everyone will have to split up the 25 reps into smaller chunks. Do whatever you can, but there's no doubt your workout will slow down here.

Then move into forward lunges for 50 reps, doing 25 for each side. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, and step forward (with a slightly exaggerated step), place your foot on the ground, bend the knee and drop your hips straight down. Push through the lead leg to return to the start position. Do all reps for one side and then switch.

Next up is 50 Close-grip Pushups. These are the same as regular pushups, but with your hands placed only shoulder-width apart, no wider. Keep your elbows tucked into your sides to emphasize your triceps.

Move back to the bar to do 50 Inverted Rows. Set the bar at hip height in a squat rack or smith machine, lie on the ground underneath it, and grab the bar 3 inches wider than shoulder-width apart. Keep your body in a straight line and row your chest to the bar while supporting your weight on your heels. Squeeze your shoulder blades together at the top of the movement.

Now its back to 50 bodyweight squats, regular style, with your hands in front of you or at your sides.

Then finish off with 25 chinups. Grab the bar with a shoulder-width, underhand grip and pull your chest up to the bar. After 24 more reps, you are done.

I wrote an article on losing weight before. It was well received and I have added some new tips. Lift weights. A lot of people only think of this when they want to get stronger. But you can burn a lot of calories when you lift and it can speed up your metabolism for hours afterwards.

Run sprints. Another common misconception is that you need long endurance running to burn calories.

But running sprints at top speed for 8 to 10 seconds can burn a lot of calories and speed up the metabolism.

It's also great for people that want to lose weight without hurting there explosive capability (endurance running will hinder your explosiveness. I once heard that most marathon runners have a 12" vertical jump.)

You don't necessarily have to eat less. You might just need to change what you eat. Try eating more fruits, vegetables, lean meats grains and low fat dairy products. I recommend having skim milk you can even have chocolate milk as that is usually low fat.

You should eat healthy and watch your calories five days a week but you can take two days a week to eat more and enjoy less healthy foods.

If you want to eat something that you shouldn't during the "rest of the week" then eat it in the morning. You should eat less as the day gets later. Sometimes it's best to eat a little something now rather than a lot later. What I mean by that is that just quitting your favorite foods cold turkey can cause you to really pack them in later.

So letting yourself have some every now and then can help give you the drive to keep watching what you eat. Use the two days a week where you are allowed to eat more and the early morning eating you help you with this. It can be a lot easier to say "I can't have that right now but I can have some in the morning" or "I can't have that today but in a couple days I will be able to have as much as I want" as opposed to saying "I can never eat that again" or "I can't have any till I lose at least 75 pounds".

If you take that attitude you will probably give up before you get there.

Also I have heard that taking some sugar free gum can help you overcome cravings for sweets. I am not a fan of artificial sweeteners, but I do make an exception with gum. Any gum that you chew (sugar free or not) will have less calories for you then eating something. And not only can gum help overcome cravings but you are also less likely to eat something when you have gum in your mouth.

Not to promote tobacco use but have you ever known someone that chewed tobacco? They don't eat when they have "just put a pinch in" the same thing can work for you! That's why I recommend keeping a good tasting and long lasting gum with you.

When you get a craving for sweets, doesn't work well when you are REALLY hungry but if you are just craving something or a little hungry then have some gum. Or if you are getting ready to go somewhere that you might be tempted like the gas station then pop in a piece.

Personally have chewed Extra sugar free gum, but I don't think that it's all that great. Anyway I would be more worried about what the sugar does to your teeth then gaining weight from gum with sugar in it. I have heard that Orbit sugar free sweetmint gum works well for this purpose.

Drink at least one glass of water BEFORE every meal. I also recommend have a glass of water or skim milk with ever meal to help fill you up.

To strengthen your body you slowly build up the weight and get progressively stronger.

To strengthen your mind you challenge it with progressively harder material.

The same thing can be done with your appetite. You should stop eating before you get full at every meal. If you eat till you are no longer famished but are not yet full you can progressively train yourself to feel satisfied with less.

We have probably heard it a hundred times at least but it's probably worth mentioning at least one more time. Do the little things like taking the stairs instead of the elevator or park father away from the entrance and walk a little extra.

One of the biggest reasons that most people fail trying to lose weights is probably a combination of procrastination and hard to archive goals.

People put off dieting till things get really bad "I am not really that fat" "It's just a little baby fat" "I will lose it easy enough when I want to" Then real quick they realizes that they are way over weight and they want to lose it right now! Day 1 - Follow My Weight Loss Program - And So It Begins

Ok so over the past few years, give or take a few, I have packed on some extra pounds. Ok how about 50 extra pounds. With a lack of exercise and good eating habits, it really doesn't come as a surprise.

However with a 7 month old son now, I feel I owe it to him to get in great shape. Otherwise I might not be able to catch him once he starts walking.

I actually started yesterday, but thought it would be a good idea to share my progress with the Internet crowd with this blog. Let me first say, I am not a personal trainer, salesman of any health related products or anything like that. Just an average person who is trying to lose 50 pounds and is willing to share it with you.

My goal is to lose 50 pounds by December 31st, 2008. That gives me roughly 54 weeks to make it happen. In turn using this information I need to lose 0.93 pounds each and every week. Sounds like a reasonable goal and very achievable. The hard part is, can I stay on it? Can I stay on a daily regiment of eating right and exercising for that long?

The way I look at it, I really don't have a choice. I have to. For the sake of my son and family and my own health, it needs to be done.

Over the past few weeks I have been reading a number of health magazines and books, to get up to date on eating right and proper exercising.

I will post my progress everyday on here for the previous days activities.

Also as I come across something interesting that I feel I should share, such as a healthy recipe or good exercise, I will write about it here and let you know of the source as to where I obtained the information. I will not post something that I don't try first. It is just not fair to anyone who reads this. How can I endorse something if I don't even try it?

Day 1 - Weight: 275 pounds

NUTRITION
Meal 1: 3 egg whites, 1 whole egg
Meal 2: 1 packet of tuna
Meal 3: Spinach and lettuce mix with cut up baked chicken tenderloin and a small Gordon's salmon patty.

Meal 5: 2 1/2 whole eggs

EXERCISE
Walked the dog in the early morning for about a half hour. Wasn't a steady even paced walk as the dog needs to, you know, stop and do his thing.

NOTES
First day was tough in the sense of eating every 2 to 3 hours. I haven't done that in years, but it was a lot tougher late at night, while I am sitting there watching the football game. I was used to eating chips and other bad foods. It is a bad habit I am sure will really challenge my will power.
